Often, after prolonged use of Cascara as a tonic, the bowels will operate naturally. Cascara also improves the flow of secretions of the stomach, liver and pancreas, improving digestion. It is also effective on the gall bladder ducts and helps the body rid itself of gallstones, whilst increasing the flow of bile (which is also needed to lubricate the colon). It is also effective in ridding the colon of parasites and worms. It does not interfere with the natural bowel flora, often a problem with chemical laxatives. It can be used on its own, or in combination with other herbs and/or fibres (such as psyllium) which bulk the stool and sweep the sides of the colon, absorbs toxins, keeping it clean and free of pockets.
